About Us

Organization for Pastoralist, Peace and Development (OPPD) is a nonprofit making grassroots organization and local established community-based organization, founded by group of committed professionals, volunteers and lovers of the better world.

OPPD was established after survey was conducted by the founders, which the result has showed a large number of East Africa pastoral regions (Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya) are one of the most food insecure regions, with the large number of its population living at subsistence levels and dependent on food aid.  The pastoral areas have an extremely variable and low rainfall distributed bi-modally, where the average annual rainfall ranges from less than 200 mm to 700 mm. Due to the an erratic rainfall regimes in these range areas, there is a wide seasonal fluctuation in quantity and quality of vegetation which poses major problems to livestock production. Livestock production is the major occupation for the pastoralists, who represent the major portion of population in the pastoral areas. However, low livestock productivity and Marketing constraints direct or indirect effected pastoralists livelihood.  If improved livestock productivity and marketing is attained, livestock population in pastoral area has the potential to improve food security and livelihood of pastoralists, creating employment opportunities and improving per capita income etc.

On the other hand it was identified that the result of  internal boarder conflict, recurrent drought, influx of refugees, internal displaced people (IDPs) caused by wars and natural calamities such as drought both within the country and neighboring countries has exacerbated the situation. The Somali traditional system that was formerly known to automatically support the poorest group in a community has no longer existent today because of the continuous needs of the poor and due to the deteriorating social status of the community. As a result there were no tangible socio-economic interventions directly addressing poor Pastoral and Agro-pastoral communities to improve their livelihood. These above mentioned constraints will increase the existing extreme poverty’ and a disproportionate impact on those low-income countries’ economies. Without effective and timely interventions, guided by appropriate strategic plan and polices. Proper Strategic plan and Policies are plays a critical role in controlling and preventing those constriction. Recently, a range of policy recommendations have been proposed for countries to follow to improve the pastoralist economic status of those pastoralist living in those, but unfortunately few progress were made in this regard.

The Organization for Peace, Pastoralist and Development (OPPD) was established to provide humanitarian assistances , development, peace building and capacity building to Pastoralist and Agro pastoralist vulnerable communities in East Africa where livestock is of importance with a vision for become excellent organization in Pastoral peace building and development efforts in East Africa, working with regional governments and nongovernmental agencies, by initiating   ideas and worked with a conditioned manner and creating of  a favorable condition to promote their interests through integrated and harmonized approaches based on the  initial  government mandated sectors of intervention for the organization which addresses issues of (Peace building, Agriculture, Food security & livelihood, Environmental and Natural resource management, Water and Sanitation, and community  capacity building, in close collaboration with all stakeholders and collective community action and   coordinated efforts of the society as a whole
